Popular Nigerian gospel artist, Bunmi Akinnaanu-Adeoye, has opened up about her difficult journey to success, disclosing how she borrowed clothes, jewellery to shoot her music videos, especially Omije Oju mi.

In a viral video on social media, the singer shared personal stories of resilience and determination in Yoruba.

She revealed how her struggles shaped her and motivated her to persevere despite overwhelming challenges.

Reflecting on her life, the “Omije Ojumi” singer said, “If you hear my story, you will weep along with me. I don’t like granting interviews because, at some point, everyone involved—the interviewer, interviewee, and cameraman—will break down and cry. My story is very bad.”

Bunmi recounted the extreme poverty of her early years, which saw her wearing rags and bathroom slippers to church. Despite these hardships, she refused to let her circumstances define her.

She also admitted that every outfit and piece of jewelry she wore in the music video for the hit song Ibere Nla from her Omije Ojumi album, produced by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), was borrowed.

“All the clothes I wore in the song Ibere Nla were borrowed,” she said.

“If you watch the video, the blue-black iro and buba I wore was trendy at the time, but it wasn’t mine. In fact, if you look closely, another person wore it among the dancers in the video.”

She also shared how the earrings used in the video came with a strict condition.

“The person I borrowed them from was in the video, standing behind me. She warned me, ‘If you lose it, you are dead.’ At one point, the earring fell, and she signaled me to pick it up quickly because it must not get lost.”
