In a bid to curb vandalism of electricity infrastructure, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company on Thursday donated solar-powered streetlights, torchlights, and fuses to five communities in Gombe metropolis.
The communities include Hassan Central Primary School in Herwagana, Liberty Junction around Jekadafari, Tumfure Market by Resort, Gabukka, Pantami Feeder, and Federal Low-Cost II.
Speaking during the presentation, the Head of Corporate Services, JEDC, Musa Abdullahi, said the initiative was aimed at mitigating the frequent attacks on distribution transformers in the area.
Abdullahi noted that the company spends millions annually on replacing vandalised equipment, adding that the donation of these items would enhance security and ensure uninterrupted power supply in the affected communities.
“We are here to donate these items to community heads for use by vigilante groups to protect installations in their areas. This initiative will reduce the rate of vandalism on installations, particularly on Band A feeders,” he said.
Abdullahi urged the communities to take ownership of the installations and remain vigilant.
“We call on communities to monitor activities around transformers closely. Ask questions when you see anyone tampering with the transformers, especially when they are not faulty. This level of vigilance is critical to ensuring the protection of these installations,” he added.
Highlighting the impact of vandalism on JEDC’s operations, Abdullahi lamented that copper wires and transformer oil are often stolen and sold illegally, resulting in significant financial losses for the company.
“Vandals sell copper wires to make jewelry and mix transformer oil with diesel to power locomotives. Replacing these items costs the company millions,” he explained.
In response, the Chairman of Hassan Central Primary Community, Usman Malala, commended JEDC for the gesture, noting that it would go a long way in ensuring a stable power supply in the community.
Similarly, the leader of Tumfure Market distribution area, Dennis Danladi, lauded the company’s efforts in addressing vandalism.
“We will ensure that the vigilante members use the torchlights effectively to safeguard the distribution transformers and prevent further theft,” Danladi assured.
The donation is part of JEDC’s broader strategy to partner with communities in securing critical electricity infrastructure across its coverage areas.
